I use My read her books well. I really thought it was a little slow. And it doesn't end now I expected. One person found this helpful. She is lost and floundering but is a mother of small children and perfectly capable of running her life, so I was left a bit confused about her.
Fergus is an elderly gentleman who, after suffering a stroke, lives in a nursing care facility. I think that this is what makes this book different from her others. This novel spans both one day and a whole lifetime at the same time and I think the pacing works really well for such a short book. The story kept me interested until the end but it really just felt at a surface level. If I had lost the book part-way through, I probably would not have sought out another copy to continue reading.
Utterly beautiful. This is an utterly beautiful book. Completely and bone deep wonderful. But we find joy somewhere - and sometimes we keep it to ourselves, sometimes we share it.
This book is that story. Took a little while to get into but really enjoyed it. Different to my usual taste. I enjoyed reading this book but its not one that I would pick up and want to read again. Firstly, I found the whole tone of it rather sad throughout. From reading about Fergus' ordeals in school to the rest of his life which he has basically been leading as a lie.
Although you do find sympathy and understanding as to what led him to become so withdrawn. Then to his daughter who also seems to be a sad, lost flower who is getting sick and tired of her job and seemingly losing the whole purpose of her life - to which you also find a reason as to why she may have been feeling like this later on in the book, but still somehow I didn't feel all that sorry for her.
The story did keep me guessing though right until the end as to who delivered the marbles and how it tied into Fergus' life. However, the characters failed to connect to me emotionally in any level. I was also a bit put off by the amount of swearing in this book, I mean, I know they are Irish, but isn't it a bit discriminative to portray the whole family as a rough bunch? I'm guessing that the main message from the story is that communication is key when in a relationship. If you have problems, you don't bottle it all in any keep it to yourself no matter how angry or humiliated you feel.
In life we come across challenges that can test the strength of a relationship and I think in the end Sabrina realises that opening up was the key to making herself happy and keep the family together.
